Welcome Economics Students!

The amazing Sport Management students of Professor Kaplan's Sport Economics class are taking it to the next level; incorporating the latest technology into the classroom. Their theme of 'putting it all together' is what this overall assessment is all about. Demonstrating mastery of the economic principles and concepts necessary for management decision-making in the global sport industry, the class has been researching, developing, and publishing blog content entries in a collaborative class project. All students are integrating their semester-long research and outcome assessments, breaking into student teams to edit and submit subject area content, and designated student administrators are facilitating and managing the blog, with ongoing classroom editing and interactive comment opportunities.

Ryan Howard’s New Contract

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=7666321

This video by MLB.com talks about the recent contract that was negotiated between the Philadelphia Phillies and Ryan Howard. In the end both sides agreed to a 5 year, with a sixth year as a club option, totaling in $125 million dollars. The analysts in the video talk about how this deal, with the amount it was worth, was a direct effect of the earlier deal made between the Twins and their catcher Joe Mauer. Both were resigned while already in contracts that were ending at the end of this season.

This signing has a huge impact on the economics of baseball because of the high amount of money Howard will be receiving during is long-term contract. This is now going to be a bench mark price set up for the free agents to be following the 2010 season; among those names Prince Fielder (Milwaukee Brewers) and Adrian Gonzalez (San Diego Padres). Look for both of those players to land big money, long term deals with there next respective teams.

This video link provides information with regards to the funding of professional sport organizations stadiums and arenas. I chose this video as I believe that it represents the misconception that pro franchises make money for a city. This video suggests the opposite and provides evidence as to why having a pro sports team can have a negative on a city's economic situation.

The link is informative, concise and the video doesn't take long to watch. It provides sufficient evidence and also gives clear examples of how a pro spots team can be a negative to a host city.

I selected this video because it was talking about how sports are affecting the city of Detroit. This is very reliable information because it was conducted and researched by Professor Mark Rosentraub, of the University of Michigan. He talks about how the sports in Detroit impact the economy in the city. Now we all know that t he city has been hit hard because of the ford plant being shut down and that was the main source of revenue for the city. But, now the sport teams have to pick up the slack of money not being made. Going to this link will help a student understand how a city can be affected by losing a huge company that was very successful and made a lot of money and jobs, and also how sports can contribute to a city that has been struggling because of the loss.

I researched this content because I am a huge football fan and I am amazed by the sight of the new stadium. It is relevant to sport because it talks about the building of the new stadium in Dallas and the cost of putting it all together. You should go to this link if you want to know more about Dallas Cowboys Stadium and to get a chance to see what it looks like from the inside.

This video contains financial speaker Boyce Watkins and his beliefs on college athletes being paid. He believes very strongly that the athletes need to be compensated in some way for the amount of work and time they put in, as well as the amount of money they help bring the school. This is one of the most controversial topics in college athletics as there is such high competition in sports and the desire for every college to have the best athletes is so great.

This video gives a quick overview of how the economy is affecting the sport industry. They explain how Pittsburgh’s new stadium is behind on payments and how Blackhawks and the Thrashers need a 60 million dollar bailout. Even the baseball Hall of Fame is lowering ticket prices due to the economy. It is a good video because it tells how serious and devastating this economic crisis is in the sports industry, even to teams who have sellout crowds like the Blackhawks.

I selected this because it is relevant, yet humorous. the content is quite reliable and it reflects how much tickets cost for tickets at the NY Yankees.

  1. Marks video about Yankee stadium is funny, but it still had many good facts. Some of the facts are crazy to think about.
